The gigantic homes on acres and acres of land. I'm going on about this to say that their is a unwritten rule that in order to be looked upon as a expert or someone who is successful you have to portray that type of image. Name dropping people your affiliated with and wear a mask of success and never let it slip, and you'll boost your sales and your income. This type of branding is successful for some.
Bottom line is your content. People read your emails because they want to learn about something that can maybe help them improve their business. I'm sure you know people that when your around them they are constantly trying to dominate the conversation and you can't get a word in edge wise. Trust me this doesn't make me want to know more about this person, in fact I really want to turn the other way whenever I see them coming.

Tell a similar list or e-zine owner that you'll host their back issues if they host yours. It will increase your subscribers, traffic and sales. It might be a little extra work and take up a lot of web space but can be well worth it.
